How To Make Easy And Delicious Quince Jam At Home?

Quince jam is one of the traditional flavors of Turkish cuisine. It is a jam prepared by boiling quince fruit in sugar syrup. Quince fruits cut into thin slices are boiled in sugar water until they soften. Then, it continues to boil until it reaches the consistency of jam, and after it cools, it is filled into jars and stored.

Ingredients:

  • 1 kg ripe quinces
  • 800 grams granulated sugar
  • 1 lemon
  • 4 cups water
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: vanilla or cinnamon

Preparation:

Preparing the Quinces:

  1. Wash the quinces and peel them. Don’t discard the peels, as they contain pectin, which helps to thicken the jam. Cut the quinces in half, remove the cores, and then dice them into small pieces. Place the diced quinces in a bowl and mix with a little lemon juice to prevent them from browning.

Preparing the Sugar Syrup:

  1. In a large pot, combine the water and granulated sugar. Optionally, add a pinch of salt and some vanilla or cinnamon. Zest the lemon and squeeze its juice into the pot. Lemon zest adds flavor and helps maintain the jam’s color. Stir all the ingredients together.

Cooking the Quinces:

  1. Bring the sugar syrup to a boil. Once boiling, add the diced quinces to the pot. Stir occasionally to ensure all the quince pieces are fully submerged in the syrup. Cook the quinces over medium heat for about 30-40 minutes, or until they are soft and translucent. Occasionally check the consistency of the syrup by dripping a small amount onto a cold plate. If it thickens and doesn’t spread out immediately, the jam is ready.

Filling the Jars:

  1. Once the quinces are cooked and the syrup has reached the desired consistency, remove the pot from the heat and let it cool slightly. Transfer the jam into clean and dry glass jars. Do not fill the jars to the brim; leave about a centimeter of space at the top. Seal the jars tightly.

Storing the Jam:

  1. Invert the jars to cool completely. Once cooled, turn the jars upright and store them in a cool, dark place.

Serving:

  1. Quince jam can be enjoyed on toast, crackers, or as a topping for yogurt or ice cream. It also pairs well with cheese.
